Distinguished Service Award

April 9, 2011 saw nearly 100 teachers in attendance at the annual spring workshop presented by the Center for the Liberal Arts in Charlottesville VA. They witnessed the presentation of the AATSP-VA Distinguished Service Award to Professor David T. Gies, member of the Faculty at the University of Virginia, Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. In keeping with his delight with surprises, his wife was enlisted to be certain he would be in Charlottesville and at the workshop without suspecting anything. Everyone else involved managed to keep the secret and David was totally surprised.

An excerpt from a letter from David:

…I was totally surprised and overwhelmed by the coup… this morning at the CLA Seminar. I am incredibly honored and touched by this gorgeous award. The thought that my years of work with [my] colleagues across Virginia - which is so stimulating and fun that it feels like a reward in itself - would be recognized in this way is almost too much to believe…I'm deeply grateful…Thank you. Gracias.
